Objectives of the National Livestock Mission (NLM)

    • Promote genetic up gradation of livestock.
    • Encourage artificial insemination and embryo transfer technology.

    • Ensure adequate and nutritious fodder for livestock.
    • Promote silage-making, hydroponic fodder, and azolla cultivation.

Financial Assistance & Subsidies

  • Entrepreneurs & Farmers: Subsidy of up to 50% of project cost (up to ₹50 lakh) for setting up breed multiplication farms.
  • Fodder & Feed Development: 50-75% subsidy for fodder production and feed processing units.
  • Poultry Farming: Special focus on backyard poultry farming with financial support.

Eligibility & Application Process

  • Who Can Apply?
    • Farmers, FPOs (Farmer Producer Organizations), SHGs (Self-Help Groups), Cooperatives, Startups, Private Companies, and NGOs.
  • How to Apply?
    • Applications can be submitted through the Udyami Mitra Portal or via the respective State Animal Husbandry Departments.

GST & Tax Implications

  • GST on Livestock & Feed:
    • Livestock (cattle, sheep, goats) exempt from GST.
    • Poultry, fish, and meat products taxed at 5% or 12%, depending on processing levels.
    • Fodder & Feed: Exempt from GST to promote livestock rearing.
  • Income Tax Benefits:
    • Income from livestock farming is treated as agricultural income (exempt from income tax under Section 10(1) of the Income Tax Act).
    • If structured as a business entity, normal corporate tax rates apply.
